Despite the recent Smalltown Drive-in Cinema event being hailed as a resounding success by the organisers, the grumbles about the event are still rumbling on.
Amongst the complaints were “It’s going to make a terrible mess of our green park”, “They should spend the money on other things” and Lady Brassy’s “How will this attract shoppers to Smalltown?”
Even Cllr. Fencesitter got involved “You can’t blame me, I was asleep and didn’t know anything about it.”
The event, organised by Cheese-supremos, Margo and Felicity Farmhouse-Kitchener, was held in the Pinnacle Park car park.
Margo told SomersetClive” Contrary to popular belief we weren’t personally asked to organise this event, we responded to a post on Sadgebore’s website asking for help spending their Welcome Back funding. They wanted proposals for ‘someone to manage, coordinate and deliver a series of small events across the district. It is envisaged that the events will take a form of a picnic in the park, drive through cinema, small music performances and similar activities aimed at local residents. We’d do it ourselves but we can’t be bothered.’
You know us, naturally we jumped at the chance to promote ourselves and increase our portfolio of events, so we instantly sprang into action.
A meeting was held by Sadgebore Council and representatives from the Smalltown Chamber of Trade, Smalltown Shops group, Smalltown and Dullbridge Town Council were all invited. It’s hardly our fault if these groups didn’t turn up, nor come up with their own ideas to spend the money.
If Sadgebore saw fit not to circulate the minutes of the meeting to their own Councillors or other interested parties then that is up to them.”
Felicity Farmhouse-Kitchener added “We have other events planned over the coming months, including a Cycle-in Cinema, the Rusk Festival in Dullbridge, and of course, Nicholas Voyd’s location map – which will see the author reveal the places and stories that inspired his series of bodice-ripping novels which are set in Smalltown.”
We are also looking for funding to run an entirely new event in the area – The Smalltownbury Festival, – this will be a week long event, which will see all the green areas in Smalltown and Dullbridge covered with a sea of tents. It’s going to be great and hopefully after all this work we will get another award because, after all, that’s what it’s all about.”
