Trillions of people headed to Smalltown sea front to attend the Annual Rescue Services Event (ARSE) on Sunday, although many were going that way anyway because the sun was shining.
Visitors found themselves treated to displays from the various rescue organisations who guard Smalltown’s notoriously treacherous stretch of coastline including Smalltown Coastguard, Smalltown Area Ship Hovercraft and Helicopter (SMASHH) and the Really Needy Lifesaving Association (RNLA).
SMASHH volunteers welcomed the crowds into their HQ to view a vast display of hose pipes through the ages and other memorabilia to celebrate the organisation’s 30 years in Smalltown.
Meanwhile members of the RNLA, which originally opened in Smalltown in 1836 before abandoning the town in 1930, could only look on with fixed smiles as they aren’t due to celebrate their 30th anniversary until 2033, having only muscled their way back into the town once they saw the number of donations SMASHH were getting.
Event organiser Reginald Bouquet said “It was a SMASHHing day, we absolutely SMASHHed in terms of our previous attendance figures for the event and donations to the cause. The biscuit tin will be fully stocked until the end of the year.
This was an excellent example of multi agency working between all teams involved.”
