Smalltown Beach was described as “very busy” by a man who went for a paddle in the sea on Saturday.
Mr Arthur Dwindle told SomersetClive “I’d only dipped my toes into the water for a few seconds and suddenly I was seeing double. I know when I entered the water there were a couple of families sat on the sand, but when I came out of the water there were at least four families.
I’ve never seen Smalltown Beach that busy, so I think they’ve been putting something into the water around here which has affected my eyesight.”
However, several local shopkeepers confirmed that the recent heatwave had brought visitors out in their handfuls.
At least 29 people were seen on the beach with some building sandcastles, whilst others paddled or swam in the sewage-infested water, beating the previous record set in May this year, when 27 people were spotted enjoying the beach.
Meanwhile, on nearby Bream and Barrow beaches the Bream Area Rescue Ranger and Enjoyment Dictator (BARRED) was kept very busy warning people to keep off the beach, in an attempt to curb any enjoyment that could be had from building sandcastles or getting their vehicles stuck in the mud.
SomersetClive contacted the Smalltown Manager of Usefulness and Tourism (SMUT), Ivor BiggPockett, for comment but a spokesperson for the Smalltown Office for the Beach (SOB) swiftly reminded us “You know he doesn’t work weekends, because that’s our busiest time.”
