Sadgebore District Council has spared no expense and installed new warning signage advising people to stay well away from Smalltown Beach.
It follows concerns that, after the recent heavy rains which has seen a massive discharge of sewage into the normally crystal clear waters around Smalltown, the Environment Agency has downgraded the water quality from ‘Poor’ to ‘Swim here and you will Die’.
Blair Stagg, SDC spokesperson said “We decided to act quickly when we read in the papers that the Environment Agency has added Smalltown Beach to their list of beaches which have the potential to kill.
We immediately sought out the services of a sign writer to help craft the notices at short notice and Callie Grapher came highly recommended by Smalltown’s St. Judas Junior School.”
The sea water around Smalltown has been tested and it has been revealed that it contains a number of organisms that can cause severe reactions, including the possibility of contracting a number of severe illnesses including Typhoid, Dyptheria, the Black Plague, Dysentry and Donkey Pox.
As well as the new signs Sadgebore workmen will be adding further safety measures including barbed wire and land mines along the beach to prevent visitors and residents paddling.
