Smalltown’s Poet Laureate writes

May the banners and flags today unfurl,
Someone has given birth to a baby girl.
The dad is delighted, over the moon,
This news couldn’t be more opportune,
I’m hoping the papers will forget about the party,
And concentrate on the news of a birth hale and hearty
. “

Sadly the papers had no such intent,
And news of the birth made barely a dent.
Stories of shindigs filled page after page,
Even the Queen reacted with rage.
One isn’t amused, One grieved alone,
Whilst others held parties with balloons over blown.”

When asked for a comment, proud dad did reply
Rules for us rulers they just don’t apply.
You seem to be implying that we’re all corrupt,
That my time is now up, you all think I’m f***ed.
That’s why I am grateful to have an excuse,
To take some time off, become a recluse.”
Next year I’ll be back, when you’ve all forgotten,
That when it comes to politicians we’re all of us rotten.”
