The Smalltown and Dullbridge (SaD) Town Council Town Unimprovements Committee held at the end of May saw Councillors consider an approach from a trader in Dullbridge asking for support for a makeover of Merchant Street in the town.
Mr Mark Spencer wrote to SaD Town Council: “Merchant Street has seen a decline in people in the area, which is having an impact on traders.
I would like to get a group of locals together from the area to try and spruce the place up so it looks better and brings more people to the area.”
In the wake of the failure of Sadgebore District Council’s Re-Imagine Dullbridge Bid, a proposal put together by Ex-Councillor Fencesitter and disgraced Councillor McCads – which was deemed ‘The Kiss of Death‘ by Dullbridge traders who felt the loss of free parking spaces would have led to a further decline in shoppers – Mr Spencer put forward some proposals of his own to brighten up the area, which included:-
- More flower planters around possibly with benches.
- Some hanging baskets above the local shops.
- Get rid of the litter and weeds around the area just make it more better looking and cared for.
Mr Spencer continued “We have planters
currently in Merchant Street already, but these are tucked away by the Dullbridge Community Hall and haven’t been used for many years. No Council has bothered to put any plants in them and now they are full of weeds and look terrible.
They would look great if they were moved to the road by the crossing with lovely plants in them.
Shop and business owners could be encouraged to hang baskets of flowers from their premises. A little bit of colour would go a long way to brighten up what has become a drab and dreary area of Dullbridge.
It wouldn’t even cost that much money. I would hope that most of the things we want to do could be funded by companies in the area, but even a small contribution from SaDTC, I believe a sum equivalent to the £400 Dictator Dullard spent on her Youth Town Council scheme to hire Queen Ethelred’s School Hall and cover the cost of medals, would suffice.
Would this be a possibility to help the growth of Dullbridge? With your help and permission we can get Dullbridge back thriving again.“
Members of the Committee discussed the matter, and agreed that, although they were good ideas, it was not their place to give permission, nor could they be expected to get their hands dirty messing about with flowers and that therefore SaD Town Council couldn’t do anything to help.
Councillors also queried what matters in Dullbridge had to do with them anyway, and even the Dullbridge Councillors failed to show their support for the town they purportedly represent. Instead Councillors agreed that making improvements to Dullbridge was not part of their remit and suggested that Mr Spencer could try connecting with other volunteers in Dullbridge to move things forward.
However, they made clear that any funding required should come from the All-New-Yet-Unimproved Somerset Cuonty Council, as SaDTC are only responsible for spending money on Dictator Dullard’s pet projects in Smalltown.
Mr Spencer told SomersetClive “I’m disappointed, but not surprised. It has always been a tradition that SaDTC ignore Dullbridge in favour of Smalltown, but I thought that the BeFuddleds might be more amenable to the idea of improving the area. Sadly I was wrong.”
Dictator Dullard later confirmed that there was no money in the pot for Dullbridge as any spare cash was earmarked for a visit to Smalltown’s Twin Town, Huang Lo in North Korea, in return for Smalltown Town Council recently hosting a Gala Ball for Huang Lo dignitaries.
