SomersetClive Editor Clive Saint was invited to visit the newest public house in Smalltown, which opened its doors at the weekend. The offer included the opportunity to sample some of the beverages available and unfortunately we haven’t seen him since.
The Iron Lady, situated on the sea front on the site of the former ‘Fun’ pub and next door to Smalltown’s Witherspoons, is described as a ‘traditional seaside pub’ although, unlike other beachfront pubs around the UK, you can’t actually see the beach or sea from this one.
Owners Bill and Faynor Lurke also run the Sad and Desperate pub in Smalltown, so expect more of the same. “We decided to call it The Iron Lady because, until the recent Town Council elections, Smalltown was an Illiberal Party stronghold, with Squire Teflon claiming to be the Top Illiberal and Mrs Thatcher’s number one fan, so the name reflects this link.
Once we’ve settled in we will be offering a range of traditional seaside meals of jellied eels, cockles, and fish and chips, but until then we have salt and vinegar crisps behind the bar.”
The venue also hopes to have live music at the weekends, but with The George, The Jetty, The SaD and Desperate, and the Blitz Social Club all already offering live music, it remains to be seen if there will be enough musicians to go round.
