The Blitz Social Club has submitted an application to install an outdoor cinema screen in George Street in a bid to create a Smalltown version of New York’s Times Square.
If approved, the plan would see screenings of the latest blockbuster advertisements beamed to the streets of Smalltown 24/7. The proposed site is currently home to one of the pieces of street art installed as part of the Smalltown Painted Art Mural (SPAM) festival.
A spokesperson for the company behind the proposal, Bill Board, said “Although the site falls within the Smalltown Conservation Area we don’t believe it will have an adverse affect as we don’t think there is much worthy of conservation in Smalltown to start with. With a constantly changing display of advertisements it will give the new residents of Fuchers Folly something to look at from their balconies and will add to the visual amenity of the area.
Using an illuminated hoarding means that we will no longer have to pull our vans up on the pavement outside to manually replace the display, which results in rubbish and extra fuel costs, so has huge environmental benefits, even though it is something we aren’t doing at the moment, because the site currently doesn’t have an advertising hoarding.
Manager of the Blitz Social Club, Pale Ale, said “As well as installing this obtrusive piece of street clutter on our exterior wall the company have offered to paint the outside of the building, which hasn’t been painted since 1846 and is looking a bit tatty. Having a freshly painted exterior and a constantly-changing massive illuminated screen will definitely enhance the Smalltown Conservation Area.
