Smalltown Defence Day cancelled

A spokesberet for the Royal Smalltown Legion has confirmed that legionnaires will be off to Easton-under-Water to mark Defence Forces Day after being snubbed by Smalltown and Dullbridge (SaD) Town Council this year.

Traditionally the day has been marked in Smalltown with a parade of ex-Smalltown service personnel and local cadet groups, followed by the raising of the Defence Forces Day flag accompanied by music from the Smalltown and Dullbridge Town Band.

However, this year there has been no one available from the Town Council to offer support or coordinate the event.

The spokesberet said “The lack of full time office staff, coupled with a bunch of councillors who have no idea how to organise anything other than Parent Evenings has meant that our plans to mark the day in Smalltown have had to be shelved.

It’s a great shame and I do wonder if the lack of support stems from a BeFuddled Party desire to distance themselves from anything that may be vaguely connected to the idea of fighting in the playground, or it it is down to their inability to understand the joy of winning something – given their lack of experience in that area.

It’s a good job this bunch aren’t in charge of co-ordinating the reaction to an invasion by hostile forces, otherwise it would be Dullbridge and Smalltown Town Council now.

Our members will instead be going over to Easton-under-Water, where the Council appreciate our service and wish to show their gratitude and support.”

SaDTC said “It’s regrettable that we haven’t been able to pull our fingers out and organise anything for this year, especially when towns and villages across the country have managed to do so. However, we will be flying our Defence Service Day flag from the flagpole. If we have time to find it in whichever cupboard Squire Teflon has hidden it in.”
