Following a long-running campaign, fought valiantly by Cllr Fencesitter, the battery in the Smalltown Town Clock has finally been replaced.
The clock, which is prominently displayed in a side street, had its battery removed in August 2016 to mark the time of death of Former Smalltown and Dullbridge Town Mayor, Horatio Nelson.
Since then it has displayed the correct time of ten past four only twice a day.
Cllr Fencesitter said “I’m absolutely delighted that SaD Town Council has agreed to funding for a new battery. It’s taken a while to organise but it’s finally working again. The clock is in my electoral ward and, although none of my constituents had mentioned it to me, I know they found it something of an important issue, so I’ve worked hard to resolve it for them.“
“Despite ruling Smalltown and Dullbridge for many years a lot of people had no idea who Former Mayor Horatio Nelson was. I understand that on occasion even he didn’t know who he was and would often approach residents asking them “Do you know who I am?”, so this tribute had largely gone unnoticed. You could say that it’s about time that Smalltown began keeping up with the times!”
