Gritting map revealed

Somerset Cuonty Council have released a map showing the roads in the Smalltown and Dullbridge area which will be kept clear of snow and ice this winter. The routes (shown in red on the map above) show that priority will be given to the main roads through the towns.

Dullbridge Councillor Jim Woodenman, who is Somerset Cuonty Council’s Suitcase Holder for High Roads and Low Roads, says: “Our main priority this year will be to ensure that all roads leading from Councillors’ homes to Cuonty Hall are kept clear. We have a number of Christmas parties planned and it is essential for us to be able to attend.”

“Our dedicated teams are ready to slowly spring into action when needed, after spending this year scouring fish and chip shops to make sure our salt bins are fully stocked.”

Be assured they’re looking out of their windows at least twice a day and are also checking the new high-tech SWIG (Seaweed Weather Indicator Gadget) every day to ensure that they put their gloves on whenever temperatures drop, and frost or snow is forecast.”

The new SWIG was purchased by the Cuonty Council at a cost of £94,000 and two of the Council’s gritter lorries had to be sold to part-fund the cost.

Responding to criticism from some that not enough roads are gritted, he added “We can’t treat any roads, as there aren’t enough gritters, drivers and depot staff to make this cost-efficient.”

“However, we are carrying on our work with small councils to ensure they have ample supplies to do it themselves. We will be sending every council in the district at least 20 of the sachets of salt we’ve managed to purloin from the fish and chip shops, so that they can spread it around themselves.”
