There was surprise yesterday when the latest entrant in the Smalltown Area Stuck-in-the-Mud Meet played their hand early in the season.
Visitors and residents alike gathered on the beach to enjoy the spectacle of the Bream Area Rescue Ranger and Enjoyment Dictator (BARRED) getting his beach buggy stuck in the mud.
“I’d spotted two small children attempting to enjoy the delights of a seaside holiday and headed over to them to tell them to stop it and get back to their parents.” said Bill Old, the on-duty BARRED.
“I was reaching for my loud-hailer to assist me in shouting at them and wasn’t paying full attention to my location when I got that sinking feeling. Sure enough the wheels of my buggy were stuck. A local resident came to my rescue and pulled me out before either the Coastguard, Smalltown Area Ship, Hovercraft and Helicopter (SMASHH) or the Really Needy Lifesaving Association (RNLA) could become involved.
I really wasn’t expecting to enter the competition this early in the season, and to be honest, I wasn’t that happy with my result, so I’m hoping to get in a few more attempts before the end of October to see if I can do better.”
