Criminal Police Commissioner Mike Shellfish has confirmed that Council Tax payers in Smalltown and Dullbridge can look forward to a six percent increase on their bills, which equates to £15 for an average household.
The decision follows a six-week long consultation which asked residents if they supported the increase. Only 45.3% did, whilst 46.2% said No.
Mr Shellfish said “I’d like to thank local people for taking the time to complete the survey and share their views.
As you can see, I’ve completely disregarded the results, which saw the majority of people disagree with my plan. But hey – that’s democracy for you.
Whilst it is true that more people took part in this survey than voted for me to take on the role of Criminal Police Commissioner you have to understand that just because the majority view is that we shouldn’t do something we have to take into account the views of the minority. Where would we be if we always listened to the majority?”
Mr Shellfish also confirmed that anyone who tries to subvert the system by not paying their Council Tax can look forward to a night in the cells.
