A second Blue History Plaque has been unveiled in Smalltown, this time commemorating the site of the metal ‘Welcome to Smalltown’ sign.
Readers may remember that Smalltown and Dullbridge Town Council commissioned the sign at a cost of £10,000 and then promptly forgot all about it.
When someone finally remembered that they’d ordered and paid for it attempts were made to track it down, but during the intervening period of forgetfulness the company supplying the sign had gone into liquidation and the sign had vanished.
SomersetClive ran a campaign offering a reward to anyone who could find the sign, and although possible sightings included Squire Teflon using it as a headboard in his bedroom, the sign remains elusive.
SaD Councillors agreed that it was all rather embarrassing and agreed that the sign would never be mentioned again. The new History Plaque has been installed on the spot that the sign would have been erected, if it hadn’t gone missing due to incompetence.
